For the first time, astronomers followed cosmic neutrinos into the fire-spitting heart of a supermassive blazar.
For the first time ever, scientists have determined the cosmic origin of highest-energy neutrinos. A research group led by IceCube scientist Elisa Resconi, spokesperson of the Collaborative Research Center SFB1258 at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), provides an important piece of evidence that the particles detected by the IceCube neutrino telescope at the South Pole originate from a galaxy four billion light-years away from Earth.
An international team of scientists has found the first evidence of a source of high-energy cosmic neutrinos, ghostly subatomic particles that can travel unhindered for billions of light years from the most extreme environments in the universe to Earth.
The observations, made by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station and confirmed by telescopes around the globe and in Earth’s orbit, help resolve a more than a century-old riddle about what sends subatomic particles such as neutrinos and cosmic rays speeding through the universe.
Scientists have captured a ghost-like subatomic particle on Earth, helping to solve a mystery baffling scientists for 100 years.
The so-called “ghost particle” was trapped by researchers in a giant ice cube at the South Pole.
It’s actually a high-energy neutrino, and is the first of its type ever detected by scientists.
Importantly, researchers believe they’ve tracked its likely source: a supermassive black hole that emits light and cosmic rays.
President Donald Trump said Thursday in an unscheduled news conference that all NATO members have agreed to increase their defense spending after he told them he was „extremely unhappy.“
„Everyone has agreed to substantially up their commitment. They’re going to up it at levels that they never thought of before,“ Trump said.
Trump criticized bloc members that approved the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline from Russia to Europe. The president criticized Germany in particular, calling it a hostage of Russia.
President Donald Trump came out brawling in his first public comments here ahead of NATO’s annual summit, accusing a close US ally of being „a captive of Russia“ and all-but ordering members of the alliance to increase their defense spending „immediately.“
(4.7.2018) In a bid to coax small- and medium-sized German companies active in Iran away from the Islamic Republic, Ambassador Richard Grenell has quietly begun engaging business executives with an offer to help them tap the much larger and lucrative U.S. market, according to people briefed on the talks. On Tuesday, he met with the German Chambers of Commerce and Industry and about a dozen companies to make his pitch.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday dismissed the reports that Germany has blocked parts of the Islamic republic’s financial assets as „baseless,“ according to the ministry’s website.
The reports aimed at creating a „psychological war“ as Iran and Europe are in talks over the former’s nuclear standoff, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Bahram Qasemi said
„All the members, even the three allies, have committed and have the political will to take action and resist the United States,“ Iran’s Foreign Minister Zarif told a Vienna news conference broadcast by the Fars news agency.
„This is the first time they have shown this level of commitment, but we will have to see in the future what they really want to do and what they can do,“ Zarif said.
„If they continue to demonstrate the political will they showed today, they will get things done without any problem.“
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that Russia, China, Germany, France and the UK have agreed to establish a permanent expert mechanism that will be tasked with finding ways to maintain trade with Iran regardless of US sanctions. Sputnik discussed this with Professor Christopher Bovis.
In tandem with the upgrading of relations with Israel, there is growing friction between central European states and the EU. This revolves mainly around the issue of migrants. Tensions reached new heights this month over a compromise on closing the EU’s external borders and the establishment of screening centers for migrants. The measures were opposed by Germany, but strongly promoted by Hungary and Poland.
Alternative for Germany (German: Alternative für Deutschland, AfD) is a right-wing to far-right political party in Germany
The top diplomats of China, EU, France, Germany, Russia and the U.K. have assured Iran that they were willing to salvage a historic nuclear deal abandoned by the U.S.
The deal, known officially as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was forged under the administration of former President Barack Obama in 2015 and scrapped by his successor, President Donald Trump, in May. With Iran looking to face stricter U.S. sanctions, the foreign ministers of the EU and five other nations who signed the nuclear agreement met Friday in Vienna in an attempt to negotiate a viable framework in the absence of Washington.
Chancellor Angela Merkel, who staked her legacy on welcoming hundreds of thousands of migrants into Germany, agreed on Monday to build border camps for asylum seekers and to tighten the border with Austria in a political deal to save her government.
Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany thought she had fended off a mutiny within her own conservative alliance after returning from marathon talks with fellow European leaders on Friday with an agreement on how to handle migration.
But instead, the rebellion escalated late on Sunday, further weakening Ms. Merkel, who was once seen as a rock of European politics and the guardian of the liberal world order.
(5.6.2018) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned German Chancellor Angela Merkel Monday that Iranian meddling in the Middle East could touch off massive new refugee flows to Europe, as they clashed about the future of the nuclear deal with Tehran.
The Pentagon analysis of basing in Europe comes as relations between Trump and Europe have plunged over his decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, sparking tit-for-tat measures, and to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, a pact viewed in Europe as a model for peaceful conflict resolution.
Vance was greeted by several German officers, who have a large peacekeeping contingent in Mali, which includes a unit of helicopters, some of which Canada will replace in the coming weeks.
The members of the advance team are only the first of what will be a steady stream of troops and equipment to arrive between now and August, including eight helicopters, to help the beleaguered UN mission.
Germany has been belatedly classified among the participating nations in the Korean War, as South Korea has added the European country to the list of countries that provided medical assistance during the 1950-53 war, government officials said Friday.
The Italian prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, yesterday threatened to pull out of an emergency European migration summit called to help save Angela Merkel’s government, and had to be won round in phone calls with the embattled German chancellor.
The issue has returned most visibly in Italy, where Matteo Salvini, leader of the anti-immigrant League, lost no time in falling out with some close European allies over his decision to deny access to port for a refugee vessel. But it’s also forced uncomfortable decisions in Spain and is threatening Chancellor Angela Merkel, who faces renewed domestic turbulence over her open-door stance on migrants that could yet spell her early departure.
France’s government will likely be following Germany’s into the halls of speech regulation infamy.
Italy must solve its debt problem on its own, German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz said Friday.

Merkel, May and Macron are still waiting for the Israelis and Americans to present another way to curb Iran’s nuclear programme, but are under no illusions it will happen in next week’s meetings, according to a European diplomat.
Apparently, even if the people vote for him, no one can hold a cabinet office in Italy without pledging allegiance to the euro.
Almost every expert agrees that the conflict between the president and the coalition government’s proposed cabinet members is a constitutional gray area.
ITALY has become “a colony of Germany”, according to a Five Star MEP who lashed out after President Sergio Mattarella brought in his own unelected europhile Prime Minister to keep a eurozone crisis at bay.
“I will go to Europe next week. I will meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and possibly British Prime Minister Theresa May,” Netanyahu said in broadcast remarks.
A poll taken in the immediate aftermath of Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea found more Germans preferred a position of neutrality than did standing with Western allies. A Pew survey the following year reported majorities in Germany, Italy and France opposed defending a NATO ally hypothetically attacked by Russia — a more categorical rejection of alliance solidarity than anything to come out of Trump’s mouth. While the president’s threats to impose tariffs on aluminum and steel may be counterproductive to strengthening transatlantic ties, so was the 2015 Berlin protest, with a crowd estimated at 150,000, against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, a proposed free trade agreement between the United States and the European Union.
(13.4.2018) Germany, as always, isn’t doing enough in international missions.
President Donald Trump is pressing Germany to pull the brakes on a major gas deal with Russia as the price for avoiding a trans-Atlantic trade war, according to German, U.S. and European officials.
The officials said Mr. Trump told German Chancellor Angela Merkel in April that Germany should drop support for Nord Stream 2, an offshore pipeline that would bring gas directly from Russia via the Baltic Sea. This would be in exchange for the U.S. starting talks with the European Union on a new trade deal.
According to the official website of Iran’s Foreign Ministry, following the US announcement of its withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the Iran nuclear deal, EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini held talks with the Foreign Ministers of France (Jean-Yves Le Drian), Germany (Heiko Maas), the United Kingdom (Boris Johnson) and of the Islamic Republic of Iran (Mohammad Javad Zarif) on Tuesday, May 15, 2018.
According to the press release, the top diplomats attending the meeting:
“We are operating in a very difficult context,” Mogherini said after an intense day of diplomacy that included meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and the foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany. All of those countries were signatories of the deal that aimed to prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon in exchange for economic incentives. She said European leaders hoped to have a firm plan within a few weeks.
Dr Rouhani also referred to the upcoming meeting of foreign ministers of Britain, France, Germany, Iran and European Union foreign policy chief on Tuesday and expressed hope that the meeting would secure Tehran’s interests by saving the JCPOA.
Describing the nuclear deal very important for peace and security of the region, he stressed that the US was responsible for the consequences of anything that happens to the JCPOA.
“In the JCPOA, the two parties have obligations and it is not acceptable that only one party lives up to its commitments,” Rouhani added.
He also referred to the significant role of the three European countries in saving the JCPOA and described Europe’s stances against US’ secondary sanctions a brave move that could maintain Europe’s position and global credit.
Bolton noted that Trump said in announcing the U.S. exit from the Iran nuclear deal that “countries that continue to deal with Iran could face U.S. sanctions.“
“Europeans are going to face the effective U.S. sanctions, already are really, because much of what they would like to sell to Iran involves U.S. technology, for which the licenses will not be available,” the national security adviser said.
Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Angela Merkel at the German side’s initiative.
A senior State Department official said discussions with Britain, France and Germany, as well as Japan, Iraq and Israel had already taken place since U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday pulled out of the nuclear pact.
Speaking in a televised address to the people on the JCPOA, President Hassan Rouhani said: “As verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran has lived up to all its commitments and tonight, it was revealed who the unfaithful is”.
He continued: “Today, we saw what we were reiterating from 40 years ago, and that is Iran is a country that lives up to its commitments and the United States is a country that has never done so”.
“In the past 40 years or even before that, history tells that Americans have had a hostile approach towards the great Iranian nation and the nations of the region; from the coup in Iran against the legal government of Dr Mosadeq to their interference in the affairs of the past regime, supporting Saddam and attacking Iran’s passenger plane and killing innocent people and what they have done against the people of Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen and the Middle East and North Africa and against other peoples of the world”.
He also referred to the US’ withdrawal from the JCPOA and continued: “In fact, this was a confirmation of what they have been doing in the past months in another way”.
It is with regret and concern that we, the Leaders of France, Germany and the United Kingdom take note of President Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States of America from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
Together, we emphasise our continuing commitment to the JCPoA. This agreement remains important for our shared security. We recall that the JCPoA was unanimously endorsed by the UN Security Council in resolution 2231. This resolution remains the binding international legal framework for the resolution of the dispute about the Iranian nuclear programme. We urge all sides to remain committed to its full implementation and to act in a spirit of responsibility.
(16.3.2018) The joint paper, seen by Reuters, was sent to European Union capitals on Friday, said two people familiar with the matter, to sound out support for such sanctions as they would need the support of all 28 EU member governments.
(19.3.2018) Remember when the new Germany was keen to put its historical baggage behind it and be Israel’s best friend in Europe?
That was then. Now Berlin is set to block a historic chance for raising the Jewish state’s international profile.
(28.3.2018) Maas told reporters before his first United Nations visit as foreign minister that Germany’s candidacy had been announced long ago, and did not diminish its strong support for Israel.
“We are not running against anyone; we are running for a seat,” he said, following the criticism from Washington’s nominee as U.S. ambassador to Berlin and others. “That is a topic that one can deal with very normally.”
(18.3.2018) Why? Diplomats have been telling me Israel violates too many Security Council resolutions to be a member—as in the one passed during the last weeks of Barack Obama’s presidency, which marked Jewish holy sites as occupied Palestinian territory. But is building a porch in [the West Bank town of] Ma’ale Adumim really such a huge threat to world peace?
How about, then, a report released last week by UN experts on the Security Council’s North Korea sanctions? It found Germany violated a council ban on sparkling wines, exporting $151,840 worth of bubbly and other luxury goods to Kim Jong Un’s cronies.
A day after Josef Schuster, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, warned against Jewish men wearing a kippa (skullcap) in public, demonstrators wore the head covering in a gesture of solidarity.
The largest event took place in Berlin, with other demonstrations held across the country in Erfurt, Potsdam and Cologne — with people of different faiths coming together.
„I’m not Jewish, I’m an Israeli, I grew up in Israel in an Arab family,“ the man told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
He was conducting what he termed an „experiment“ in response to a warning from a friend that wearing a kippa in Germany was unsafe, saying he refused to believe this.
An interview by Israeli broadcaster Kann identified the 21-year-old as Israeli Adam Armoush and showed that he was slightly injured by the belt.
The U.S. tried to shame Merkel’s government into helping in Syria, arguing that Germany of all nations should be appalled by the use of chemical weapons on civilians, according to a U.S. official who asked not to be named discussing strategy.
Vladimir Putin and Angela Merkel agreed to continue joint efforts in the Normandy format to settle the internal crisis in Ukraine.
The two leaders also discussed the situation in Syria, including chemical attack accusations made by a number of Western states against official Damascus. Russia’s position – that it is unacceptable to use this as an opportunity for provocation and speculation – was conveyed.
(28.3.2017) According to German media, Turkish officials handed the target list including names, addresses, telephone numbers and photographs to their German counterparts during the Munich security conference in February.
Federal prosecutors will examine how Turkey compiled such detailed information on their targets.
“The success of our investigation will depend largely on the information shared with us by German counter-espionage agencies,” spokeswoman Frauke Koehler said about the investigation into “persons unknown”.

(4.1.2018) A UN mission should be deployed in the areas of eastern Ukraine gripped by the conflict, not just along the contact line to protect observers of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM), visiting German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said in Kiev on Wednesday.
„It is necessary that a UN armed and powerful mission can be deployed across the entire territory [of Donbass], but not merely for protection of a small group of OSCE mission and along the contact line as a new border of Ukraine,“ Gabriel told a joint news conference with Ukrainian counterpart Pavel Klimkin.
(13.3.2007) Syria is surrounded by unfriendly forces. Turkey, a close ally to Israel in the north, Jordan in the south, the U.S.-occupied Iraq east and Lebanon west of it.We know from Seymour Hersh (and in fact, „we“ does mean „6 Billion Jurors in the Court of Puplic Opinion“), that the Bush Administration and the royal dynasty of Saudi Arabia, in coordination with the Israeli Government, are funding Sunni islamists and terrorist militias in the north of Lebanon and all over the middle east, allegedly to prevent the so-called „Shiite crescent“.
We know, that the Lebanese Leader of the Druze, Walid Jumblatt, met with Dick Cheney in Washington last fall and advised him, if the United States does try to move against Syria, members of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood would be „the ones to talk to“.
We also know by the New Yorker journalist, that „there is evidence that the Administration`s redirection strategy has already benefitted the Brotherhood,“ that there is Saudi money and American involvement.
