The European Parliament last month joined a slew of Western nations in recognizing Venezuelan opposition chief Juan Guaido as interim head of state after President Nicolas Maduro won a second term in an election last year that critics denounced as a sham.
The four deputies from the center-right European People’s Party (EPP) were traveling to Venezuela to meet with Guaido, one of them said in a video distributed via social media.
It is clear that Netanyahu is incapable of running state affairs as if he isn’t in the midst of a legal battle, while the state is incapable of functioning as though its prime minister isn’t immersed in corruption cases. We must put an end to this saga as soon as possible.
(1.2.2019) Insisting once again that Iran is complying with the 2015 nuclear deal, the head of the U.N.’s nuclear watchdog complained this week that attempts – he didn’t say by whom – to pressure the agency on inspections were “counter-productive and extremely harmful.”
(2.2.2019) A veteran CIA officer was discussing Iran’s future at an international security forum in Israel on Tuesday (Jan 29) when the moderator cut him off to cue up a breaking news bulletin on the giant monitor overhead.
Iran, Israel’s Channel 2 announced, had just abandoned its landmark nuclear deal with world powers and will start kicking out inspectors immediately.
Pence accuses EU of leading scheme to ‚break American sanctions against Iran’s murderous revolutionary regime‘
Referring to Iranian protests in 2009, the vice president said, „The world missed an opportunity last time to confront the regime, but not this time.“
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after a public appearance with Pence Thursday, told NBC that Iran „has to be countered and it has to be countered now.“ Asked if that means regime change, Netanyahu said, „I don’t rule anything out.“
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday it is impossible to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East without confronting Iran.
Pompeo is in Warsaw to participate in a conference on the Middle East co-hosted by Poland and the U.S. State Department that was originally supposed to focus on Iran, but the title was later changed to “Promoting a Future of Peace and Security in the Middle East.”
Netanyahu has declared war on the state. This is what the election is really about. It’s not Netanyahu versus Gantz and Lapid and Gabbay; it’s not right versus left, or right versus the soft right or the center-right. It’s Bibistan versus Israel. One side still refuses to see this; the other side is already two thousand steps ahead of it.
Netanyahu has launched an all-out war. To him, the end of his rule equals the end of the world, so the precept of “kill or be killed” applies.
THE RUNDOWN | Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s biggest obstacle to staying in office may not be at the ballot box, but in the office of Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit. He must decide if and when to file corruption charges against Netanyahu.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hailed Thursday as historic a Warsaw meeting where he is joining Arab states, saying they stood united against Iran and voicing hope that cooperation extends to other areas.
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has a heated exchange with Elliot Abrams, the U.S. special envoy to Venezuela, highlighting his role in the Iran-Contra affair. She says, „I fail to understand why members of this committee or the American people should find any testimony you give today to be truthful.“ The exchange came during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing.
(7. Oktober 1991) From July 1985 through 1988, ELLIOTT ABRAMS was Assistant Secretary of State and headed the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Inter-American Affairs.
As Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs, MR. ABRAMS chaired a Restricted Interagency Group („RIG“) comprised of, among others, representatives of the United States Department of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Central Intelligence Agency („CIA“), the National Security Council („NSC* 1 ), and the Department of State. During 1985 and 1986, the RIG met regularly to coordinate the activities of these agencies in Central America.
(8. Oktober 1991) As the State Department’s point man on Latin America, Mr. Abrams headed the Restricted Interagency Group, a panel that coordinated the Administration’s Central America policy among officials at the White House, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Pentagon.
Other members included Mr. North, the Marine Corps lieutenant colonel and White House aide who managed the day-to-day operations of secretly aiding the Nicaraguan rebels, and Alan D. Fiers Jr., who supervised Central Intelligence Agency activities in Central America.
In this capacity, Mr. Abrams operated as a high-visibility figure who seemed to relish his combative public role in defending Administration policy in Central America, while at the same time working closely with officials who were engaged in secret efforts to supply the rebels with arms after Congress barred direct military assistance in late 1984.
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) engaged in a testy back and forth on Wednesday with special envoy to Venezuela Elliott Abrams, accusing the diplomat of being a liar and pressing him on his involvement in the Iran-Contra affair and killings in Central America during the Reagan administration.
On the 13th and 14th of February, Warsaw will host an international conference co-chaired by Poland and the United States, to promote peace in the Middle East. The Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz announced, Monday, that 60 delegations, including ten from the Middle East and all EU member states, will attend the conference.
(20.10.2018) The highly likely ascension to power of far-right extremist Jair Bolsonaro is already unleashing a climate in which journalists who are critical of him and his movement – including several writing for the Intercept – are being subjected to an aggressive campaign of personal investigation, attempted intimidation, and thuggish scrutiny of family members.
These attacks are being orchestrated by the media outlets owned by a far-right, scandal-plagued, evangelical pastor-billionaire, Edir Macedo (universally known as The Bishop and founder of the sprawling Universal Church of the Kingdom of God), who is now an explicit supporter of Bolsonaro.
(10.2.2019) The deal would involve Netanyahu resigning in exchange for not being put on trial, in which case Likud would have to elect a new leader before the elections, “an upheaval” whose results would be unpredictable, the Yisrael Beytenu chairman said.
(10.2.2019) With the attorney general gearing up to announce a possible indictment against him, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has beefed up his defense team, hiring prominent defense attorney Pini Rubin, a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said Sunday.
Poland and the United States are jointly organizing a global conference in Warsaw on February 13-14 that will focus on Iran’s influence in the region, according to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
(31.1.2019) The participation of the two means there could be some discussions about the Trump administration’s Middle East peace plan
(20.1.2019) Next month, Washington will convene 70 world leaders in Warsaw in an attempt to form an alliance against Iran. But they all remember Trump’s zigzagging policies
(22.214.171.1249) In summary, while some GCC states may wish they could build a military alliance capable of confronting Iran, that goal may be farfetched in 2019. Instead, the notion of the alliance could very well be the Trump Administration’s hidden path to the goal of normalizing Gulf relations with Israel, without much of a serious attempt at confronting Iran.
Some 60 countries have confirmed their attendance, but both Iran and the Palestinian Authority won’t take part
(10.2.2019) The Republican leader in the U.S. House of Representatives said he would take action against two Democrats who have sharply criticized Israel if the Democratic majority did not do so.
“If they do not take action I think you’ll see action from myself,” Kevin McCarthy of California, the minority leader, said according to Capitol Hill reporters writing for a number of newspapers. “This cannot sustain itself. It’s unacceptable in this country.”
(29.1.2019) Brazil, Rubio argued, can be a „force multiplier“ in addressing the crisis in Venezuela.
Rubio suggested that the US should support Brazil’s ascension to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and its space capabilities.
The US, Rubio said, should capitalize on Brazil’s new right-wing government, saying previous leftist governments in the country „undermined“ its economic and political stability.
This isn’t the first time Trump backs Netanyahu, who has been boasting of his ties to the U.S. president in content released ahead of the April 9 vote
Despite tensions between their home countries, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 21 in Moscow, where the two are expected to discuss the Iranian threat.
5 million followers (many from Brazil) ■ Enthusiastic comments (some by bots) ■ Financed posts (but we don’t know the sums) ■ This is why Netanyahu no longer needs traditional outlets
ILTV speaks with Lahav Harkov (Jerusalem Post) about the recent tensions between the Israeli Prime Minister and the Israeli media.
So profoundly, in so many ways, is Benjamin Netanyahu not a Jew. Neither are many, many of the members of his government. Foul of heart, gutter snide, they have no regard for the teachings of Judaism which forbid shaming, command respect for the non-Jew and the migrant, set out the the ideals of compassion, lovingkindness, universal human rights, charity of spirit and material generosity. Bibi and his close loyalists spit with disgust on the idea that all were created in the image of God – even leftists, Palestinians, journalists.
The United States and its right-wing allies in Latin America have come out in support of a parliamentary right-wing coup against the Venezuelan government of socialist President Nicolas Maduro after they supported a decision by opposition lawmaker, named Juan Guaido, to declare himself an “interim president” of Venezuela on Jan. 23 in violation of the country’s constitution.
Washington, Canada and members of the so-called Lima Group, which include Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Paraguay, and others were quick to recognize Guaido as “interim president” with the government of Donald Trump and his advisors urging the country’s military to step in and rebel against Maduro. The military has repeatedly stated its full support for the Maduro government and rejected such calls as interventionist and a breach of the sovereignty of Venezuela.
(25.1.2019) When the U.S. rushed to endorse a military coup against Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in 2002, it ended up with egg on its face. The self-styled leader of a “Bolivarian” revolution was back in office within three days — and more anti-American than ever.
The decision by Washington to recognize National Assembly leader Juan Guaido as the nation’s legitimate president could see a repeat, if Chavez-heir Nicolas Maduro should cling onto power. But it takes place in a very different geopolitical climate, one where failure risks global repercussions.
In an astonishing interview, the US president also revealed he had turned down a request to meet Maduro, whose tenure as president has seen the country fall into economic turmoil amid a growing humanitarian crisis.
Asked if he might dispatch American troops there, Mr Trump said: “Certainly it’s something that’s on the – it’s an option.”
The sample included 600 respondents, representing a national sample of the adult population of Israel aged 18 and over. The maximum sampling error for the entire sample was ± 4.1% at a confidence level of 95%.
Labor in 2017 named as its leader Avi Gabbay, a millionaire who made his money at the helm of Israel’s largest telecom provider.
Just a year earlier, Gabbay had been a minister in Netanyahu’s cabinet for a small centrist party he had helped found. Gabbay’s appointment as Labor’s leader has turned off many in that party, who are now calling for his removal.
Prime minister’s spokesperson says AG ‚has given in to pressure from the left and the media‘ to file an indictment ‚at any price‘
For the first time on the record, a senior official confirmed Israel’s secret unconventional war in Syria, aimed at preventing Iranian encroachment. But what did Israel gain from exposing its ‚anti-intervention‘ lie after so many years of denial?
When asked who should be prime minister, 36% of those polled by Channel 12 said Netanyahu while 35% said Gantz.
A poll held last week showed that Netanyahu would lose four Knesset seats if Attorney General Avichai Medelblit announces his intention to indict him for accepting bribes ahead of the election.
Former Israel Defense Forces chief Benny Gantz, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s biggest challenger, formally announced his candidacy for the premiership Tuesday and said his government would „strive toward peace and not miss an opportunity to achieve peace in the region.“
„Netanyahu is no king, his government sows division and incitement,“ Gantz said, speaking at the Tel Aviv Convention Center.
Leaders of Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia to arrive in February as part of Netanyahu’s efforts to shake up the EU consensus on issues related to the Palestinians and Iran
No thank you. Next, please.
I, for one, did not mind Gantz’s prolonged political silence, and watching his first campaign videos shows he realizes what must be done to emerge victorious from this choking labyrinth: You must rise above it all so you can burn it all down with napalm.
„Israel before everything. Only the strong prevails. I kill mucho Arabs, green means army, army means strength, Star of David in yo’ face!“
Benny Gantz was the head of the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) during the 2014 conflict but has now entered politics and is running against Benjamin Netanyahu in April’s elections.
The 59-year-old has said little about his political positions so far but released a series of videos burnishing his military credentials.
One boasts of killing 1,364 Palestinian terrorists during the war, while another says that under Mr Gantz’s command “parts of Gaza were sent back to the Stone Age.” The videos make no mention of the 1,462 civilians killed during the conflict, according to a UN count.

An EU source said: “Analysis of the threat levels in Britain is being shared at the top of the EU as we formulate policy for the years ahead. The assessment is that violence is almost inevitable no matter what.
“They are worried that if the current deal goes through the right-wing will kick off. If there’s no deal everybody will object and kick off. If there’s a second referendum, the right will kick off. The right kicking off is causing most concern.”
An investigation by The Electronic Intifada has documented 10 fake Twitter profiles posing as Corbyn supporters who have been posting virulent anti-Semitism.
The accounts share sufficient similarities to indicate that the same person – or group – is running them.
Without police involvement or a court case, it’s impossible to know for sure who is behind this troll network.
A major online publication covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has uncovered an attempt to use social media to spread and intensify the notion of an antisemitism crisis within the Labour Party.
An Electronic Intifada investigation has revealed that ten fake Twitter accounts were set up to deliberately post antisemitic tweets. The purpose was apparently to discredit Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and the party in general. The Electronic Intifada says it’s likely that the same person or group of people created the accounts.
Mr. Pompeo has not yet proposed that Arab nations outside the war zones send troops to fight the militias, though he has left open the possibility of the United States helping piece together an Arab military coalition to move into northeastern Syria as the United States withdraws.
At the same, the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and New York Times all carried major damaging stories targeting White House Middle East policy, all sourced to unnamed American diplomats and defence officials, targeting Mr Trump’s handpicked adviser Mr Bolton for pushing the country towards the brink of war with Iran and trying to maintain the US military presence in Syria as a bulwark against Iranian influence.
No Israeli public figure shows the kind of cynicism and ability to totally bend society to his will than Netanyahu does. This affliction will disappear with him
“I am proud to shut down the government over border security,” Trump said in the White House Oval Office meeting with Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-California, the speaker-designate, and Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-NY, the minority leader of the Senate.
“If you really want to find out how effective a wall is, just ask Israel,” Trump said in an extraordinary exchange in front of the press. “[It’s] 99.9 percent effective and our wall will be every bit as good as that, if not better.”
(27.11.2018) The comparison does little more than score political points, and by fanning the already-high level of rhetorical flames, may actually be making matters worse
On December 3, freshman Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib bravely announced that she will be skipping the trip to Israel for freshman Congress members organized by the educational arm of the American Israeli Political Action Committee (AIPAC). Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American in Congress, will instead be leading her own delegation to the West Bank to focus on the issues of poverty, Israeli military detention of Palestinian children, unequal access to clean water, and possibly a visit to Tlaib’s grandmother’s village. On December 11, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez also announced she would be skipping the AIPAC-sponsored propaganda trip.
Tell all the newly elected Congress members to follow the lead of Tlaib and Ocasio Cortez and to skip AIPAC’s propaganda trip to apartheid Israel! #SkipTheTrip
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Yisrael Gantz, the chairman of the Binyamin Regional Council, called the new road “an lifeline for the residents of Binyamin,” thus disclosing a bitter truth about the settlements: They have no raison d’etre without a strong, constant connection to the State of Israel. The new road won’t whitewash the settlements and it won’t make the Palestinians disappear, it will only add another stain to Israel’s reputation.
“President Trump, I think, has made it clear publicly on any number of occasions how concerned he is about the proliferation of nuclear weapons, whether it’s North Korea, Iran, or anybody else, and he’s a strong believer in taking steps with Israel and others in the region who are like-minded to make sure Iran never gets to that point,” Bolton continued.
(7.1.2019) US President Donald Trump’s national security adviser John Bolton on Sunday reiterated US commitment to Israeli self-defense, during his meeting with the Israeli leader in Jerusalem.
National Security Adviser John Bolton will declare the election of right-wing firebrand Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil as a „positive sign“ for Latin America while denouncing Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua as a „Troika of Tyranny,“ according to excerpts seen by Axios of a speech he will give at 1 p.m. ET in Miami.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed supporting a return to democracy in Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua with Brazil’s new right-wing government on Wednesday, in a joint effort against what he called authoritarian regimes in Latin America.
Pompeo and Brazil’s Foreign Minister Ernesto Araujo considered deepening cooperation in the region at a meeting in Brasilia following Tuesday’s inauguration of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro.
In the interview to the SBT network Thursday night, Bolsonaro said he is worried about Russia’s closeness with Venezuela. In December, the two countries held a joint training mission in Venezuela that was criticized by U.S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
“My approximation with the United States is economic, but it could also be warlike,” said Bolsonaro, adding the base would be “symbolic” since American military power can reach any part of the globe.
(4.1.2019) Miko Pompeo visited newly-minted right-wing governments in Latin America this week, rallying support for US regime change efforts in Venezuela.
What is going on in our political system ahead of the upcoming election can be described like this: Right A versus Right B, a split in Right C, a possible merger in Right D, and a new glimmer of hope in Right E.
Meretz and the Joint List, the only Israeli left there is, one small and fading and the other ostracized and excluded, and both without any influence, look on from the other side of the fence. And still people say that Israel is “polarized,” that we’re this close to civil war breaking out. It’s hard to think of anything more ridiculous.
In fact – and Bibi gets this – he will have no choice. The public will demand his resignation and some of the coalition parties will do likewise. Likud ministers who see the Promised Land looming will turn their backs on him, and maybe more than that. He will lose his ability to function, his legitimacy, the moral authority to lead a state. The land will heave, and at the end of the road the High Court of Justice will await.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused the Israeli media, and what he characterized as „left-wing demonstrators,“ of applying „brutal and inhuman pressure“ on Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit to issue an indictment against him „at any price.“
(28.2.2018) Israeli military’s intelligence branch, known as “Unit 8200,” told the Australian authorities about a hidden explosive device destined for an Etihad Airways flight leaving Sydney for Abu Dhabi last July.
Earlier this month, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported on Israel’s role in helping Germany and European countries in combating Islamist terror. It revealed that Israel is part of a covert multinational counter-terrorism operation named “Gallant Phoenix” that gathers intelligence on Islamic State war criminals returning from the Middle East to Europe.
Unlike NSO, Candiru is more conservative in its choice of customers. Most of them are in Western Europe and none of them are from Africa. In fact, the company reportedly doesn’t sell equipment to Israel, although that is for business – not political – reasons, they say.
“For example, if Germany needs offensive cyber equipment for some national security matter, it will develop it in-house without question,” explained one source, who asked not to be identified. “But if it needs to contend with human trafficking from Turkey, for instance, it will buy cyber gear from an outside source where the issue is less sensitive.”
(12.9.2014) I assumed a role in which people are called “targets”, and those people who really interest us are in no sense terrorists, but rather generally normative people – who interest us because of their roles, so that we can obtain more intelligence and achieve greater access. We take advantage of the capabilities that we have over these people in order to put ourselves at ease. We take advantage of the impact that we have on their lives. Sometimes it involves truly harming a person’s life, or their soul. I mean extortion whereby they must hide things from people around them. It can really screw up their lives. It made me feel omnipotent.
Candiru, named after an Amazon fish known to parasitize the human urethra, recruits heavily from 8200 intelligence unit and sells offensive tools for hacking computer systems
Mandelblit’s spokesman also confirmed the Hadashot report which said that Mandelblit met last week to consult with a mix of former attorney-generals, Supreme Court justices and head state attorneys: Yehuda Weinstein, Meir Shamgar, Aharon Barak, Moshe Lador, Elyakim Rubinstein, Dorit Beinisch, Edna Arbel, Gavriel Bach and Zvi Zamir.
According to the report, all those present unanimously said that the decision must be published pre-election.
(31.12.2018) ‘Imagine if ultimately the case was closed, and a prime minister had been ousted,’ Netanyahu says. That would be ‘a terrible blow to democracy’
36% of respondents say they prefer Netanyahu as prime minister compared to 29% who chose former army chief Benny Gantz ■ Leaderless, Habayit Hayehudi fails to cross electoral threshold, two polls show
An Israel Television News Company survey found that 52 percent of the public does not wish to see him return to the Prime Minister’s Office, while 34 percent do. Not so long ago, the numbers were reversed, in his favor. Something has apparently dented this support.
ESTRIN: What Benny Gantz did today was form a new party called Israel Resilience. The word in Hebrew, (speaking Hebrew), indicates a toughness. And he used the word in a speech last month when he offered veiled criticism of the current leadership. There had been a lot of speculation that Gantz might run for office. When pollsters asked Israelis who they’d vote for, Gantz came in second even before he announced his candidacy. Gantz hasn’t spelled out his political platform yet, but Israeli commentators believe he’ll brand himself a centrist.
The army said that …
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Brazil’s President-elect Jair Bolsonaro on Friday announced a nascent „brotherhood“ between their countries, though there was no word on plans to move Brazil’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
Pompeo will leave Washington for Brasilia on New Year’s Eve to attend Bolsonaro’s inauguration the following day before heading to Colombia. He plans to meet with Bolsonaro, who was elected in October with an agenda and style so similar to President Trump’s that he has been dubbed the “Trump of the Tropics.”
This is a very problematic message, to say the least. If Netanyahu is dragging a whole country into an early election in the hope of preceding the attorney general’s decision on the corruption investigations, then Attorney General Avichai Mendelblit’s decision to continue the process as if there were no election is tantamount to burying his head in the sand.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told settler leaders on Wednesday that the left will try to take power in the upcoming elections „using the media and others.“
„They can’t be allowed to succeed,“ Netanyahu said at a meeting in Jerusalem, adding that a left-wing election victory „will be a clear danger to the settlement enterprise.“
The strike in the Damascus area was likely aimed at a specific target such as Iranian weapons depots, but it has a wider geopolitical context
That morning Netanyahu had taken part in a ceremony swearing in the new Bank of Israel governor, Amir Yaron, and also held a lengthy meeting with the army’s ombudsman, Maj. Gen. (res.) Yitzhak Brik. At 1:30 P.M., half an hour behind schedule, the meeting with the party heads began.
A day after announcing new elections, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu worked to advance and approve 2010 new settler homes.
Separately he has fast-tracked the retroactive authorization of illegally built settler homes on private Palestinian property.
Netanyahu’s personal scorched earth campaign against the rule of law is now the battering ram of the right’s assault on democracy
On the surface, the cryptically named Institute for Statecraft is a small charity operating from an old Victorian mill in Fife.
But explosive leaked documents passed to the Sunday Mail reveal the organisation’s Integrity Initiative is funded with £2million of Foreign Office cash and run by military intelligence specialists.
The “think tank” is supposed to counter Russian online propaganda by forming “clusters” of friendly journalists and “key influencers” throughout Europe who use social media to hit back against disinformation.
Attorney General Avichai Mendelblit told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday that he does not have the legal authority to collect information on left-wing organizations.
The Tree of Life Synagogue has a conservative congregation, and the ultra-Orthodox community does not recognize non-Orthodox movements of Judaism.
The Times of Israel described the ultra-Orthodox Lau as an „avowed foe“ of more liberal streams of Judaism. He was reportedly key in pushing the government to renege on a deal for an egalitarian prayer section at the Western Wall.
In interview with Orthodox newspaper, Rabbi Lau calls Tree of Life ‘a place with profound Jewish flavor
(1.8.2018) Indeed, the ‘special relationship’ between Netanyahu and Orban is only the tip of the iceberg. For years, Netanyahu’s Israel has been ‘flirting’ with radical right movements in Europe.
The unmistakable Israeli strategy, of course, has its own logic. Israeli leaders feel that Europe’s move to the far-right is irrevocable and are keen to benefit from the anti-Muslim sentiment that accompanies this shift as much as possible.
Moreover, the EU’s resolve to label illegal settlement products and refusal to heed calls for moving their embassies from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is pushing Netanyahu to explore these new routes.
