‘Night is descending upon Israel’: Masses rally against Netanyahu’s government
Moshe Ya’alon, former defense minister and protest leader, addresses the estimated 100,000 Israelis gathered on Tel Aviv’s Kaplan Street to call Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government a “dictatorship of criminals.”
“A state in which the PM will appoint all of the judges, there’s a name for it: dictatorship,” he says.
Ha’aretz reports Israel Police say over 100,000 protestors are on Tel Aviv’s Kaplan Street, a further 10,000 are at HaBima Square– and thousands more are protesting throughout the country.

Massive Anti-government Protests in Mayor Cities Planned for Saturday Night
he main protest in Tel Aviv will be divided, with one organizer, the Movement for Quality Government in Israel, holding a rally at Habima Square for the second weekend in a row while other most radical organizers will demonstrate less than a kilometer away at the intersection of Kaplan and Begin streets. After skipping the twolast week’s events, Opposition Leader Yair Lapid said Wednesday he would attend this weekend, alongside other members of the opposition.
The Black Flag protest group said it would center its efforts on Kaplan Street and urged opposition politicians to show up. “Following the attack on the judicial system over Deri’s disqualification, and the calls from within the coalition to disobey the ruling, the organizers of the demonstration are calling on the heads of the opposition parties to announce that they will come to the mass demonstration and stand at the head of the protest march,” said Black Flags in a statement.

100,000 Rally in Israel to Protest Netanyahu’s Far-right Gov’t
Police in Tel Aviv said around 80,000 protesters had gathered at and around Habima square.
Protests were also taking place in Jerusalem, Haifa and other cities, as center and left-wing parties, including Hadash and the Communist Party of Israel called on Jews and Arabs to reject new government policies. The demonstration marked the second week that opponents of Netanyahu’s government took to the streets.

Currently, the Israeli Left is dominated by professional NGOs, which despite their important work, can never become a political home for the masses. Meanwhile, Israel’s leftist political parties can no longer mobilize wide swaths of the population. Many people want progressive change: they support peace and oppose the occupation, they support equality and oppose racism, they support social justice and oppose rule by wealth. They need a movement to unite them, inspire them to take action, and turn their solidarity into a powerful political force.

The Tel Aviv Protest Was a Success, but It’s Only the First Test in a Long Struggle
But this protest still has no leader. The official leader of the opposition, Yair Lapid, wasn’t even there and the smaller opposition figures were greeted with politeness at best, but with no great excitement. There were even some angry shouts towards Labor leader Merav Michaeli.
Netanyahu is Israel’s own worst enemy. Why won’t western allies confront him?
A few have issued veiled warnings. None has imposed the sort of sanctions or boycotts levelled in the past on political extremists in other countries.
The coalition’s objectionable plans raise a broader, uncomfortable question for the US and Europe reaching beyond the too-familiar abuses and impunity of military occupation. In short, can Israel still be considered a reliable, law-abiding ally that shares a set of common values and standards with the western democracies? Maybe this is why governments are keeping stumm.
