„Godfather of Punk“ Iggy Pop on his disapproving dad’s final words to him

In a new book of his lyrics, „‚Til Wrong Feels Right,“ Iggy looks back on his career. „It was really fun to do the ’60s, the ’70s. By the ’80s, I’m getting grumpy,“ he laughed.

And by the ’90s, he writes, he’d „become an endangered species.“

How ‘right wing’ became the smear for those we disagree with

Inexplicably, even free speech has become a right-wing issue. When I refused to sign a ‘behavioural agreement’ form (a title invented by students who mistook George Orwell’s 1984 for an instruction manual) in order to perform comedy at the School of Oriental and African Studies just before Christmas, I was immediately called ‘alt-Right’ on national radio. When I tried to explain that I’m a Remainer with liberal and centrist views who has only voted Lib Dem or Labour, I was told ‘that’s what the alt-Right always say’.

I wonder how my Jewish great-grandfather, who died fighting Nazis in WWII, would feel about my transformation into a far-right extremist.

Boycott Israel’s Election? A Palestinian Rapper Says No

Frustrated over their choices in the Israeli election, and at Arab politicians whom they describe as ineffective, some Palestinian citizens of Israel have been gathering popular support for a boycott of Tuesday’s ballot.

But a well-known Palestinian hip-hop artist released a powerful new video on Thursday pushing back on the boycott, urging Arab citizens not to waste their votes — and expressing hope that a strong turnout on Tuesday could help send Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu packing, or even “to prison.”

Writers under surveillance

The remit of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) includes monitoring figures who potentially threaten national security. And the FBI has long included famous writers on that list.

To them, writers pose a double menace: not only do they pose a potential threat themselves, they might also inspire large groups of people to undermine the status quo, which the FBI is charged with protecting.

Natalie Portman: Israel’s Nation-state Law Is ‚Racist‘ and a ‚Mistake‘

„I am not part of the BDS movement and do not endorse it. Like many Israelis and Jews around the world, I can be critical of of the leadership in Israel without wanting to boycott the entire nation.“ Portman added that she treasures „Israeli friends and family, Israeli food, books, art, cinema and dance.“

She went on to say that Israel „was created exactly 70 years ago as a haven for refugees from the Holocaust. But the mistreatment of those suffering from today’s atrocities is simply not in line with my Jewish values. Because I care about Israel, I must stand up against violence, corruption, inequality and abuse of power.“

Confessions of a pro-Brexit millennial

It’s 2014, and I’m sitting in a university classroom in England. Right now, I’m a dance educator and studying for a more theoretical MA in the subject at the same time. This class is about contextualising performance practices within the political sphere. But most art isn’t political, I think. Our lecturer goes on to explain. Politics, I hear, is really a term about power relations. Almost every action performed by a human when there are other humans present is political, in so much as it is an assertion of status, whether higher or lower, in the greater game of power relations. We act out of a desire to attain something, perhaps to create order, perhaps to make things work for ourselves, but it’s impossible, I hear, to create art that is not an assertion of status in the context of human relations in some capacity. From now on, I look at government-funded art in a different way. I look at all art in a different way.

Artists scared they’ll lose jobs if they admit to backing Brexit

(14.2.2018) Daltrey added: “We are getting out, and when the dust settles I think that it’ll be seen that it’s the right thing for this country to have done, that’s for sure. It’s got nothing to do with any of the immigration issues or any of that for me. It was to do with much more. The majority of this country felt that their voices weren’t being heard. It would have been nice to do a deal with Europe but they didn’t want to do a deal, and they sent Cameron back with a bag.”

Caps off to Artists 4 Brexit, there should be no stigma attached to being a Brexiteer whatsoever.

Become a member of Artists for Brexit: Help us to give artists a stake in the Brexit process

While a section of every demographic and profession in the United Kingdom voted for Brexit, those numbers are ostensibly much lower within the arts sector. Many of those who voted to leave the European Union feel unable to vocalise their support publicly and where they have done so have faced hostility from employers, work colleagues and peers. It is important therefore that we establish a platform for progressive artists who are prepared to raise their heads above the parapet. We also welcome those who wish to lend their support but for personal reasons are unable to do so publicly. We aim to create an environment of civil debate, ideas and discussion to try and heal a divide that has been driven solely by a difference in views as to where we see Britain in the future.
